Tune in to npr’s All Songs Considered Blog to hear a track off the new Earth album Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light: I.

“Since its rebirth inAngels album art the mid-’00s, Earth has favored a noirish, Southwestern-tinged Americana sound that portrays impending doom better than just about anyone else. It’s hard not to think of the desert when listening to any Earth record in the last six years: The windswept loneliness of a cracked sand plane, the sun-bleached cattle skulls, the regal glory of an orange-saturated sunset — it’s all there, slow as syrup, heavier than a boulder strapped to your back.”

Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light:I comes out February 22 on Southern Lord, but you’ll be able to hear Earth’s new album in its entirety starting January 31 as part of NPR Music’s First Listen series.

The first earth song I wrote. The gong sound was created by placing a gong sample across the 88 keys of a keyboard, and everyone in the studio took two octaves (4 people at the keyboard). — DC

Ian locked me in the isolation room and told me I couldn’t come out till I had worked at the album for at least 8+ hours. This was the result. My favorite earth song until Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light.

The slowest drumbeat Adrienne ever played(especially live).

The first time I really tried to come up with an off-the-cuff solo. First time I looked to the Dead for a song title (listen to mountains of the moon aoxomoxoa, dude).

I had never realized how dense this track was until I heard the separations for the remix record. Title arrived at thru Bryon Gysin’s cut-up method (the one Burroughs stole for his unreadable trilogy).

My first song in open g(slack-key). I love S. McElligot’s creedence meets zztop riff over the chords. Oh and we made a video for this loosely based on the vanishing point.

Pentastar album art

my favorite track off hex. Title came from Cormac Mcarthy’s blood meridian and the second time I referenced the Dead (dire wolf off workingman's).
